The proclamation of the Christmas peace is one of the oldest and most beautiful Christmas traditions in Scandinavia.
This custom dates back to the 17th century, during the time of Queen Christina of Sweden, when even in the most difficult and sorrowful situations, a special peace was occasionally declared.
Traditionally, the Christmas peace was proclaimed by the mayor or the town secretary, and it was announced during the minutes before and after Christmas Eve’s midday.
In Estonia, the tradition was revived after the country regained independence.
In Tartu, the Christmas peace will be proclaimed by Mayor Urmas Klaas and Bishop Joel Luhamets. On this busy day for Santa Clauses, they will be assisted by Santa Claus Jolle and Mrs. Santa Claus Asti at the Town Hall Square.
