The Tartu 2024 Car-Free Avenue kicks off together with the River Emajõgi Festival this year. As a celebration of the two festivals we have a concert of the legendary pop-rock band Mahavok taking place. Come and enjoy a beautiful summer evening accompanied by great Estonian music!

Mahavok is a high-caliber pop-rock band whose music continues to play on Estonian concert stages and radio stations. The band first performed under the name Mahavok in 1982, alongside the legendary band Radar, at what is now Tallinn University. Their repertoire has always included jazz-rock tracks, inspired by artists like John McLaughlin and Jeff Beck. The name Mahavok is a combination of the initials of the original band members: Karl Madis, Kalev Aas, Sven Himma, Raul Arras, Heini Vaikmaa, Peeter Oronen, and Kristjan Kirme.

In recent years, Mahavok has performed with new-generation vocalists such as Marten Kuningas, Hannaliisa Uusmaa, Triinu Taul, Ketter Orav, Vivi and Viveli Maar, and Anet Vaikmaa, who has also become a member of the current lineup. Alongside original members Heini Vaikmaa, Raul Arras, and Kalev Aas, renowned drummers Roland Puussepp and Karl-Juhan Laanesaar also participate. Mahavok’s repertoire still includes a significant amount of instrumental music, but they also play beloved old songs like “On läinud aastad,” “Minna lihtsalt nii,” “Tunnete keel,” “Las ma värvin sind punaseks,” “Lootus,” and others. The creative process continues, and new music is expected to be released from the studio in the near future.
